September Is Suicide Prevention Month

“How do you know if someone you love is really okay… or if they’re just saying they are?”

That question has stayed with me for years. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this one is deeply personal. I’ve felt the heartbreak of losing a loved one to suicide. It’s a loss that changes you forever. You don’t just lose a person—you lose their stories, their laugh, their future.

The Numbers Are Staggering

Every year in the U.S., more than 44,000 people die by suicide. That’s 44,000 families, friend groups, classrooms, and communities left to pick up the pieces. And behind every number is someone’s child, someone’s best friend, someone’s everything.

How You Can Help

The truth is, most of us will never know the weight someone else is carrying. But we can do something:

  • Check in on your people. Send the text. Make the call. Ask twice if they’re really okay.
  • Be present. Sometimes the best thing you can do is just sit and listen without judgment.
  • Start the conversation. Talking about suicide doesn’t cause it. Silence does.

There’s Always Someone to Talk To

If you’re struggling—or know someone who is—help is always available. Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Someone is there 24/7 to talk, listen, and guide you through.

This month—and every month—I carry the memory of my loved one with me. On my arm, I have a tattoo of a cross and a broken rosary. The broken rosary symbolizes the loss of faith I once felt, but also serves as a reminder to never give up on faith again. Sharing this is my way of honoring them—and maybe reminding someone reading this right now: you are not alone, your story isn’t over, and reaching out can save a life.

👉 If you or someone you know is struggling, please call or text 988. One call can truly save a life.
