The Most Iconic Recipes of the South

I’ve been loving cooking. Infact, I’ve even been putting together quick tiktok / instagram videos of what I’m making at the Doll House.  Gonna have to try these – Garret

“Southern Living” has a list that identifies the most iconic recipes in the South and boy, did it make me hungry.  What are the recipes you most identify with Southern cooking?  Here are our ten favorites:

1.  Baked Mac and Cheese.  None of that from the box stuff.  Fresh from scratch, and oven crisped in 45 minutes.

2.  Buttermilk Biscuits.  These take a lot of guess and check, but once you get them down, they will be a family staple.

3.  German Chocolate Cake.  With extra coconut-pecan frosting, please!

4.  Fried Green Tomatoes.  Great snack, and movie.

5.  Skillet Cornbread.  Simple ingredients, and a cast-iron skillet is all you need.  Love cornbread in the cast iron.

6.  Hummingbird Cake.  This is the most popular recipe in “Southern Living” history.  That’s no small feat.  (Now, I want a slice.)

7.  Fresh Peach Cobbler.  We recommend enjoying it hot out of the oven with a small dollop of vanilla ice-cream.  Yum.

8.  Banana Pudding.  Homemade pudding, plus a meringue topping makes this one of the most well-known of all Southern recipes. I could eat this every day.  I can’t make meringue.  I’ve tried

9.  Shrimp and Okra.  Put it in a soup or a gumbo . . . Either way, these two ingredients belong together.

10.  Frito Pie.  Open a snack-size bag of Fritos, and then throw in some Chili, sharp Cheddar, chopped onion, lettuce, and sour cream and you have yourself a delicious and PORTABLE meal.
