2023 has been a record-breaking year in the U.S. for natural disasters, and no part of the country is completely immune to things like tornadoes, fires, floods, and storms. But there are some cities that are considered to be much safer from catastrophes. A new study looked at 500 U.S. cities and ranked them on a number of criteria including hazards risk, vulnerable populations, vulnerable infrastructure, response and recovery, and mobility. Based on those criteria, the safest city from natural disasters is Richmond, Virginia. Conversely, the city considered to be the most at risk is South Gate, California, which is in Los Angeles County.

Safest Cities from Natural Disasters:

  1. Richmond, Virginia
  2. Lynchburg, Virginia
  3. Roanoke, Virginia
  4. Midland, Texas
  5. Duluth, Minnesota
  6. Rochester, Minnesota
  7. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  8. Tyler, Texas
  9. Bloomington, Indiana
  10. Boise, Idaho
